With its 1,800 miles of coastline and 1,200 miles of sandy beaches, Florida ranks second behind only Alaska for states that offer the largest coastal land area. However, thanks to its warmer year-round climate, the Sunshine State is a far more attractive destination for coastal living and one of the most desirable places to live in the United States. In fact, according to some reports, as many as 1,000 people move to Florida every day.
For more than a century, well-heeled members of society have flocked to Florida—primarily its southeastern and southernmost coastlines—to either live permanently or to build vacation homes. Ernest Hemingway was the first to make the Florida Keys popular, living in Key West for more than a decade during the 1930s and ?40s. Winston Churchill, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor later descended on Miami and are among the many dignitaries, celebrities, and aristocrats to soak up the sun on Miami Beach during the middle of the 19th century. It was Grover Cleveland, however, who first legitimized southern Florida as a haven for rest and relaxation when he retired to Stuart, Florida on the outskirts of Port St. Lucie at the turn of the 20th century. The 22nd and 24th President of the United States lived the rest of his life in this Floridian paradise, fishing the waters of the St. Lucie River.
Greater Port St. Lucie remains a Floridian paradise that is as alluring as it was more than a century ago; however, today, it is Sailfish Point on the southernmost point of Hutchinson Island that is the most exclusive and luxurious private residential community in the area.
