Grand Colonial Hotel

California Dreaming

In California, the landmark Grande Colonial Hotel, La Jolla’s oldest original hotel, has emerged with fresh new interiors that are the mastermind of Warren Sheets Design, Inc. The firm completed improvements to public areas, including the entrance lobby, the lobby lounge, and meeting rooms of the 93-room, oceanview boutique hotel. The 1913 Colonial Revival-style hotel now features elegant European residential-style interiors with a bold color palette and subtle contemporary nuances. The new design carefully showcases the still-in-tact turn-of-the-century architecture by enhancing fine details—such as original Georgian-style arches, ornate cast plaster crown moldings, and lead glass windows—with modern elements. New Giallo Royale and Calcutta White polished marble flooring, inset with black Galaxy granite, accentuates fine accessories and handsome furnishings, including antique reproductions and contemporary pieces.

Attached to the hotel by a serene garden is a 12th-century chapel. Design Company Robb & Stucky Redesigns Breakers, Palm Beach

The Breakers in Palm Beach has always been notorious for producing first class hotel rooms and five-star services, making the resort one of the most desirable oceanfront locations in America. However, even a hotel styled with Italian-Renaissance architecture needs a facelift every now and then.

Hospitality-1st recently reported that the Interior Design Company Robb & Stucky will be working with the breakers to redesign 69 luxurious oceanfront guest rooms and suites in the Palm Beach Hotel.

“The Breakers Palm Beach is extremely pleased to partner with a reputable company such as Robb & Stucky,” said Alex Gilmurray, chief financial officer of The Breakers. “They have displayed a keen understanding of our product and we look forward to unveiling these revitalized rooms to our guests.”

Dan Lubner, the Hospitality Design Division President for Robb & Stuckey noted, “We were thrilled to create the furnishings for this property. Our intention was to ensure that the new interiors pay tribute to the historical relevance of the 114-year old resort while still providing guests with the comfort and elegance of today’s contemporary furnishings.”

Kris Kolar, the ASID and Robb & Stucky’s VP of Interior Design commented saying “Due to the historic character of the building, the units were not identical in size. This meant that space planning was a critical element of the project and furnishings had to meet certain requirements to complement the premium taste levels of the resort’s guests. First, we presented The Breakers with a 3-D rendering of our design for the finished room, plus carpet, wallpaper and drapery samples. Then, we manufactured furniture prototypes and installed a “sample unit”, which contained the total interior design, all the way down to the smallest accessories. After approval, we custom crafted every element for these elegant interiors.”

The installation of new furnishings began at the end of June with all units completed by the end of August.

However, this isn’t the first time the Interior Design company has worked with The Breakers. They previously worked on numerous assignments including furnishings for residential accommodations at Breakers Row apartments at the landmark property, which resulted in a prestigious Silver PRISM design award for the “Best Living Room for a Low Rise Condominium” by Gold Coast Builders Association.

About The Breakers Palm Beach Founded in 1896 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Breakers Palm Beach, with its 540-rooms and Italian Renaissance-style architecture is one of America’s most famous oceanfront resort destinations, located on 140 acres of oceanfront property.

About Robb & Stucky Interiors Founded in Florida in 1915, Robb & Stucky Interiors is a nationally respected interior design and premium furnishings retailer with 20 showrooms in Texas, Arizona, Nevada and Florida, including showrooms in Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton.
