HAMAK Debuts in Mexico

HAMAK hotels debuts in Mexico with eco-conscious accommodations. By Melissa Gillespie

Luxury hotel veterans and developers Alberto Remirez, Nicolas Dominguez, and Federico Carstens have joined forces to form HAMAK, a hotel group in Mexico promising a new dimension of accommodations in the region. The trio launched this endeavor with a focus on the creation and operation of eco-conscious hotels throughout Mexico.

“HAMAK focuses on creating guest experiences that recognize, respect, and revive indigenous cultures,” says Dominguez. “We don’t bulldoze a culture to build a resort.”

On the horizon for HAMAK are three distinctive properties throughout Mexico, including Ikal Cancun, a luxury all-inclusive resort set to open October 2011 in Cancún. With seven restaurants and bars, three pools, a 17,000-square-foot spa and fitness center, and interior designs by David Rockwell, the hotel promises to offer guests an experience unlike any other in the city. Their second project is Chable, a destination spa resort in Mérida. Scheduled to open in November 2011, Chable will offer the ultimate spa destination experience for guests to immerse themselves in local customs and traditions. Furthermore, HAMAK’S third project, Itaai, near Tiburon Island along the Sea of Cortez, will feature 25 luxury tents, allowing guests to embark on a journey of self discovery while fully experiencing nature. Embracing the trend of “glamping,” Itaai plans to offer the best of both worlds by introducing guests to “glamorous camping” in the great outdoors, where camping is taken to a whole new level.

With HAMAK’s dedication to creating hotels that preserve civilization comes a new crop of retreats that will awaken guests to authentic experiences. hamakhotels.com.

Spring Awakening
Following new ownership of Petit St. Vincent Resort in the Grenadines, upgrades will begin this spring. The resorts’ existing 22 cottages will be renovated in stages during low season, from April to August. With no structural changes made, rooms will be updated with new bathrooms, A/C, refrigerated minibars, and iPod players. TVs and DVD players won’t be added, as Petit St. Vincent aims to be a destination where guests can detach from some modern conveniences. A new activities desk will allow guests to take part in various sports and programs, like hiking, tennis, sailing, art classes, and wine tasting. Planned additions and renovations include an air-conditioned fitness and yoga center, an open-air spa, a children’s club, an à la carte beachfront restaurant, and a library. psvresort.com

The Top 20 Oceanfront Developments

Oceanfront living has different meanings for different people. To some, the truest oceanfront pleasure is realized the moment you step onto your boat and motor out to the high seas. To others, the consummate coastal experience is playing a round of golf where craggy cliffs meet the crashing sea in awestruck splendor. Some simply satisfy their innermost coastal connections by living amongst the pristine nature of a low-density development where the main amenity is Mother Nature’s raw beauty. By Scott Kauffman

At 6,500 square feet, this four-bedroom villa occupies an astounding 3.2 oceanfront acres—with its own private beach, of course—allowing you to relax with friends and family in a fairy tale-like home that is as secluded as it gets without it being a private island. The villa is made for entertaining, with a huge first-floor pavilion that combines a living room,  dining room, and fully equipped gourmet kitchen. The lush outdoor courtyard fits the bill as well, with a pool and BBQ porch that contains a massive 36-inch grill, big enough to cook for up to 12 guests perched at the outside dining table. jumbybayresort.com

Adding to the appeal are the bathrooms stocked with L’Occitane toiletries, as well as your own personal concierge, who is on call 24/7. Kalkan, Turkey

White Lodge. Sophisticated European travelers have been flocking to Turkey’s southern coast for decades for Mediterranean oceanfront splendor combined with the exoticism that is part and parcel of this ancient land. As more people around the world catch onto Turkey as a coastal vacation destination, finding an untouched, private place that still respects the sea is increasingly difficult. White Lodge is that place: a stunning eight-bedroom oceanfront villa that was built from local white stone and marble. A private garden, gourmet kitchen, and white grand piano complete the picture. Though beaches and bustling neighborhoods are a short drive away, the ocean and mountain views from the villa’s infinity pool will make it difficult to leave. holiday-rentals.co.uk/p419447

Low-slung couches on the villa’s terraces are strewn with countless pillows, and no matter where you wander on the villa’s six acres, you’ll have an enviable view of the Aegean Sea. whitekeyvillas.com

Castle Sol de Oriente at Costa Careyes. It’s not easy to reach Castle Sol de Oriente at Costa Careyes—fly into Puerto Vallarta and drive for a couple of hours, or fly into Manzanillo and drive for an hour—but once you settle in at one of several luxuriously appointed villas, it’ll be more than worth the effort. Each villa offers six bedrooms, with two in separate bungalows connected by an electric gondola. The lemon yellow exterior of the Castle presents a striking picture against the cobalt blue sky. The Castle is fully staffed with a chef, housekeeper, and butler, so all you have to do is focus on the task at hand; that is, taking in the ocean view. careyes.com

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Hacienda Kukulkan. This oceanfront retreat is named after Kukulkan, a Mayan god in the form of a feathered serpent; indeed, just outside is a stone mural with a carving of the fierce god. Kukulkan must have been quite a fitness buff, because the villa comes equipped with a wealth of activities to keep you and up to 16 guests in shape. The villa boasts a full-size tennis court—in fact, it’s the only villa in Riviera Maya to have one—as well as a fully equipped gym that overlooks the ocean and beachfront putting green. Need something? A concierge, a gardener, and housekeepers are on call.

Each 8,000-square-foot villa has five bedrooms, and with the Concierge House unobtrusively situated nearby on the compound, whatever you desire is within your grasp. Bulgari toiletries, Frette linens, and a large gourmet kitchen are part of the package; each villa is situated on slightly different levels, providing varied views of the Sir Francis Drake Channel. villaaquamare.com

St. John’s

Isla Vista. On a private gated hillside on Caneel Bay, everything about Isla Vista is top of the line, from the mahogany four-poster bed to the ice cream maker in the kitchen. Adjacent to the Virgin Islands National Park, the villa takes full advantage of its location, from the private garden overlooking the sea to the outdoor pavilion where you can rinse off the sand while birds nest nearby. With just two bedrooms, the villa’s size and secluded location make it the perfect romantic retreat. wimco.com/villas/villa.aspx?pid=902586

St. Barts

Le Sereno: La Villa du Pecheur. This villa with a French accent is small—it has just one bedroom with 900 square feet—but it’s perfect for a private romantic stay where it’s easy for the rest of the world to fade into the background. You’ll have your own garden, a pool, and a 600-square-foot deck all to yourself, as well as a solitary stretch of beach with your name on it. With the daybed on the deck looking out onto the lagoon, it’ll be hard to resist spending every minute outside. If you want to expand the hospitality, you can add a few suites from the adjacent Grand Suite Plage to create your own oceanfront villa complex. lesereno.com

Galapagos Islands

of hiking and biking excursions. You’ll also enjoy personal introductions to the giant tortoises that are the trademark of the Galapagos Islands. ietravel.com/galapagosvilla/home.asp

Maui, Hawaii

Island Palace. At this 12,000-square-foot palatial villa on a whopping 10 acres of Maui’s best beachfront in Kapalua, it’s easy to think you’ve died and gone to heaven. Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Turtle Breeze. Situated on Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos islands, Turtle Breeze villa comprises five bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, and is surrounded by sugary white beaches and turquoise waters. The villa, each of whose bedrooms has its own private outdoor entrance, occupies two beautifully landscaped acres along Grace Bay beachfront, providing easy access to water-based activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, and fishing. The climate on Provo, as it’s known to locals, is practically perfect all year round, meaning guests can partake in activities like golf or enjoy alfresco dining. Perfect for those who plan to bring along private staff, Turtle Breeze also offers a separate one-bedroom suite with its own kitchenette. Feel like taking a dip but without going far? Turtle Breeze boasts its own private swimming pool that’s surrounded by waterfalls and lagoons and is outfitted with a swim-up bar. turtlebreeze.com

Great Exuma, Bahamas

Bougainvillea House. Bougainvillea House comprises two beachfront homes, available weekly either individually or combined. A separate garden cottage can host a couple, a nanny, or private staff. All told, the property features six bedrooms with private baths, plus three suites with shared baths for a total capacity of 18 adults. Interiors are given an island-chic feel thanks to Tommy Bahama furnishings and linens, but the major draw here is its beachfront location and outdoor deck, which comprises 8,000 square feet of space in which to relax or to host friends, family, or the ultimate special function. When it comes to leisure, guests can enjoy boating, fishing, shell collecting, snorkeling, and scuba diving, plus activities like tennis and golf at the nearby Four Seasons Emerald Bay. bougainvilleahouse.com

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Noble House. The sprawling beachfront Noble House on Jamaica’s Montego Bay clocks in at 15,000 square feet, which includes four bedrooms and six baths, all on five acres of waterfront. Guests of Noble House can lounge on 500 feet of private beachfront, bob in its free-form swimming pool, or explore their surroundings in two single-seat sea kayaks. When they’re not taking advantage of the villa’s natural surroundings, guests can laze on the villa’s verandah (it’s outfitted with its own TV), take up a game of ping pong, or sample the amenities at nearby Round Hill (think tennis, gym, heated pools, jogging trails, bars, restaurants, and a salon and spa). However, with its breathtaking setting and its unique architecture and grounds, which comprise a series of airy pavilions that are connected by water gardens and bridges, guests just might not want to leave.

Eustatia Island, BVI

Villa Far Niente & Casa de Playa. Until recently, the only way to snag a stay on this private island was by invitation from its owner. Now, travelers can book the island’s two villas at their own volition. Perched on a hill 117 feet above the Caribbean, Villa Far Niente comprises three bedrooms, a professional-grade kitchen, outdoor living areas, a pool, a hot tub, and panoramic sea views. At the water’s edge, Casa de Playa consists of two bedrooms and is outfitted with up-to-date amenities, appliances, and fixtures, and, best of all, offers direct access to the beach and sea. A third, discreetly situated villa is dedicated to service staff, who will see to it that guests have their pick of activities—from yacht charters and windsurfing to kayaking and paddle boarding—during their villa vacation. eustatia.com

Hill Bay Beach, Anguilla

Bird of Paradise. On Anguilla’s Sandy Hill Bay Beach, Bird of Paradise features lagoon-style pools, carved rock walls, and art from Papua New Guinea. Four flat-screen TVs, a gourmet kitchen, wireless Internet, and two whirlpool tubs and outdoor showers are among its creature comforts. Fold-back walls transform indoor living space into an outdoor experience, and an outdoor living room has a fireplace, lounge chairs, a wet bar, and a treetop deck. Guests can take in spa treatments on daybeds overlooking the ocean or enjoy a sunset cruise or fishing on the villa’s privately chartered boat. anguillabird.com

Play It Forward

He’s flown more than 15 million miles, designed hundreds of golf courses, and won 165 tournaments, but Gary Player has no intention of slowing down. By, Melissa Gillespie

Recognized around the globe as the Black Knight, Mr. Fitness, and the International Ambassador of Golf, Gary Player is also a renowned golf course architect with more than 300 design projects across five continents. Recently, his company, Gary Player Golf Course Design, opened five new courses in five different countries, validating his tagline: The World’s Most Traveled Athlete™. The man who refuses to slow down has a strong passion for the environment and a real message to convey about water conservation. —M.G.

Where do you call home? My ranch in South Africa. Taking care of my horses, the 140 species of birds, and my farm is my ultimate happiness. It is also a real business, but it is work with the soul.

What about your Jupiter Island, Florida, home? Our offices are in West Palm Beach, and it was the most peaceful place nearby I could find. But my farm is my great joy.

What recent golf course projects have you completed? We opened five new projects in Abu Dhabi, Morocco, Italy, China, and Mexico.

How do you choose a course project? You don’t choose it; the project chooses you. But the project obviously has to have quality attributes and decent ownership. We don’t accept every job.

You’ve played at courses all over the world. Which is your favorite? Cypress Point [Monterey, Calfornia], but CostaBaja in La Paz, Mexico, is quickly becoming a favorite: I have never seen a golf course anywhere in the world with better views. When you come here, there is great peace—and ocean views from 14 holes.

What made the CostaBaja project challenging? There is so much in contrast in what we were able to create here with the green fairways against the desert conditions and the beautiful blue Sea of Cortez. It is a very strong layout set against such stunning visuals. But it was not easy–a lot of rock, high elevation.

“Eco-friendly” is a popular term, but what does it mean for your design? I am very much an environmentalist. Natural resources can be preserved by using native plants and more organic materials. Golf courses act as a greenbelt, which are important, as long as they are done correctly. If you leave it up to the average businessperson, they will just build and build.

How do you design to conserve resources? Water is becoming a dwindling resource and there are more important needs than the watering of golf courses. We use about one-tenth of the water that [other courses] use. No more fresh water for golf courses.

Why so passionate about water conservation? In general, people don’t worry about their health, the environment, the ocean. But the water situation is really going to be a chronic problem. There is sewage in the ocean. Can we eat a piece of fish that isn’t contaminated?

You’ve already accomplished so much. What’s next? The biggest problem in the world today is obesity. I am trying to get the message across to people to exercise and treat the body like a temple. You have to keep your body moving.

Garza Blanca is Mexico’s Newest Planned Paradise

Far from your usual stand-alone condominium project, the Garza Blanca Preserve comprises a private and exclusive planned community of penthouses and two- and three-bedroom residences on an 88-acre property that extends from jungle-covered hillsides to the famous Garza Blanca Beach, just 10 minutes south of downtown Puerto Vallarta.

The Preserve’s beach area has 46 two-bedroom, three-bedroom, and penthouse residences. Six penthouses are in the Atrium building and have a level of service and convenience that is unavailable at any other of the resort locations. Two additional beachfront buildings, each with 18 residences and two penthouses, are located on the south side of the beach. Phase I penthouses range from 3,714 square feet to 6,109 square feet. Two- and three-bedroom residences starting at 2,260 square feet also are available. All residences have large balconies.

Currently under development, the hillside area of Garza Blanca Preserve will have seven 12-story residential buildings with two units per floor. They will contain two- and three-bedroom units, as well as penthouses. Rock wall terraces with hanging gardens and four pool areas will highlight the hillside.
Amenities include a tennis club, a beach club, a European health spa, an executive fitness center, a retail village (with a deli, a market, shops, an Internet café, and a restaurant), and hiking trails leading to a common area with a waterfall. A pedestrian bridge, suitable for golf carts, connects the hillside and beachside areas, leading from the hillside directly to the main Atrium lobby, the beach, and the two beachfront infinity pools.
The beachfront phase is completed, and site work for the hillside residences is underway. Prices start at $929,000. garzablancapreserve.com.

Overwater Delight
In The Bahamas, Kamalame Cay is a private island resort just off the Andros Island coast. Its secluded beachfront cottages are ideal for relaxing and rejuvenating. The Overwater Spa at Kamalame, billed as the only one of its kind in the Bahamas, is located on a turquoise lagoon; its five treatment rooms face the surrounding sea with floor-to-ceiling windows that fully retract. Kamalame Cay recently unveiled a new villa, Cacoanut; a deep-water channel; and upgrades to The Overwater Spa’s treatment rooms. The new deep-water channel (seven feet at low tide), launched in August 2010, allows the resort to dock up to six vessels. The Cacoanut villa, on the farthest and most private end of the beach, sleeps up to 12 guests in six bedrooms and features a full kitchen and wraparound terraces with sweeping sea views. Rates for Cacoanut start at $3,140 per night. kamalame.com.

Life in Playa del Carmen Homes – Playacar Phase 1

The Beach At Playacar Phase 1

In terms of Mexico beachfront real estate, one area which has grown to be a favorite over the past two decades is that of Playa del Carmen, located on the Yucatan Peninsula about an hour south of Cancun. While the one-time fishing village has grown into a lively tourist hub with many high-quality international restaurants, boutique shops and world-class services, one stretch of beachfront right next to the quaint town center has retained a very exclusive character for the most discerning buyers. This is Playacar, Phase 1.

The Beaches and Oceanfront

Playacar enjoys all aspects of what made the beaches in Playa del Carmen and the Mexican Caribbean famous:

  • The soft, white sand – If you enjoy walking in the sand, there are few places in the world that can boast sand that is so fine and soft on your feet, or so white – a real visual pleasure as well.
  • The turquoise Caribbean – Behind this soft sand is the uniquely beautiful Caribbean sea, with a color that has no rivals.
  • The wide, spacious beach – These same beaches are very wide and spacious across Playacar and downtown Playa del Carmen, offering large amounts of space to enjoy walking, lounging and other beach activities.

Luxury Homes

Of course, the best way to enjoy some of the world’s most beautiful beaches is to live in a well-designed, spacious home overlooking these same beaches. Playacar Phase 1 is defined by upscale hotels and boutique resorts, elegant, low-rise condominiums, and luxury Playa del Carmen homes.

A contemporary design spacious 3 or 4 bedroom home with a yard or a patio directly on the beachfront can be found for around $1.2 to $1.5 million. Features will include beach views from most rooms, comfortable outdoor spaces to enjoy the beautiful views and the refreshing ocean breeze and pools.

A couple of blocks back from the beach, similar homes can be found from about $750,000 USD to about $1 million. These homes are only a very short walk from the beach (5 minutes, if you really take your time) and are located on beautiful, tree-lined roads, surrounded by other elegant homes. Playa del Carmen condos directly on this beachfront start around $500,000 USD.

Each of these property choices can bring a significant income for owners through vacation rentals; even condos can bring in around $2500 USD per week during peak seasons, and large homes would generate significantly more.

Exclusiveness

Playacar Phase 1 is a gated community with restricted access, only permitting residents and official visitors of the community’s upscale hotels and rental condos. The streets are quiet and safe, the roads are beautiful, and the properties are all of high-end quality and tasteful residents.

While all beaches in Mexico are public, there are no public accesses in Playacar; at the point where Playacar and downtown meet, the beach is virtually cut off by the ferry dock to Cozumel and an adjoining restaurant which almost meets the water (the only point that’s not really wide; there are convenient stairs up to the dock, however, should you choose to walk that way.) Those using the beach in Playacar are those same residents and visitors who can officially enter through the gated security. Playacar is among the best choices to live in Mexico on an exclusive beachfront.

Downtown – Walking Access

This part of Playacar is truly “the best of both worlds.” While offering a high level of exclusiveness, it is located directly next to the heart of Playa del Carmen’s downtown tourist area. Whether by the beach or by the road access, it is only a short, pleasant walk.

Right where Playacar ends, at the point where the ferry dock juts out, there is a new, small outdoor plaza, called “Paseo el Carmen” with boutique shops, excellent restaurants (including the Cuban chain “Bodeguita” – the original in Havana was where the Mojito was invented), nice bars, and American chains (Starbucks, Johnny Rocket’s, etc.) The walkways are decorated with fountains and benches.

At the north entrance to the plaza, begins Fifth Avenue. At this point there is a parkette between the road and the beach, with a traditional Mexican gazebo, a space for community events, many trees and flower gardens, a children’s play ground and a quaint little church.

Passing this picturesque view there begins the main stretch of Playa del Carmen’s main tourist street, which is a pedestrian walkway, lined with everything from taco shops and burger joints to fine Argentinian steakhouses and elegant restaurants serving traditional Mayan food (with an international “fusion” element added), from tourist nicknack shops to high-end jewelry stores, from live reggae bars to cafes with live jazz or champagne bars with piano concerts. There are also a number of gelaterias, pizza shops and Italian restaurants; Italians are the second largest expat group here after Americans.

If you want to enjoy Playa del Carmen at its best, living on one of the world’s favorite beaches in a very pleasant, exclusive community, with easy access to all the lively activity of this town’s main tourist street, consider Playacar.

Luxury Lifestyle on the Natural Beachfront of Akumal

Oceanfront View from North Akumal Home

Akumal, located just north of Tulum on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, is a beautiful oceanfront village which combines luxury lifestyle with the area’s splendid Caribbean beaches and pristine nature which has been carefully integrated into the village. Luxury Tulum real estate in the village is designed to optimize visual and active enjoyment of the beaches and nature, combined with comfort.

The beaches of Mexico’s Caribbean shore are wide, white with soft sand, and the famous turquoise water behind; many consider these beaches not only the most beautiful they’ve seen but also the most comfortable for walking on. These beaches draw regular returning visitors year after year, especially in the village of Akumal, where Half Moon Bay and Akumal Bay provide some of the finest and most exclusive beach areas even on the gorgeous Mexican Caribbean.

Akumal Beachfront

In addition to the beaches, Akumal is also home some of the area’s distinct natural features, including sea turtle habitats, natural sand dune areas just off the beachfront, and large lagoons a few hundred yards back from the beach, which are home to a variety of wildlife and vegetation. An aspect of Akumal which has been integral in its development since its founding is an effort to preserve this nature in a way allowing residents to enjoy it at the same time. The turtle habitats, sand dunes and lagoons are protected, with special areas for boats arriving and leaving, walking paths between the dunes and accessing the lagoon allowing residents to observe and enjoy at the same time.

Besides exclusive resorts in the area, especially the community of North Akumal is home to a small community of Americans and Canadians who have chosen to live in Mexico with luxury at its finest. Homes in the area are large, with panoramic ocean views, pools and gazebos overlooking the shore. Some include design from acclaimed architects. Oceanfront terraces, landscaped gardens and spacious yards make every aspect of life in one of these homes a pleasure.

Sea Turtle in Akumal

The nature mentioned above is also a part of the pleasure of one of these homes; vegetation preserved in North Akumal offers wonderful views from the back of properties, as well as pleasant walking atmosphere. Homes located on the one of the bays will allow residents to snorkel or dive in the ocean, observing the sea turtles, other homes are only a short walk way. (The Akumal Ecological Center provides information on how to avoid harming the animals.)

A property in North Akumal is also a great investment. High vacation rental demand has allowed many home owners to fully book their property for the 2010/2011 Christmas-New Years season before the mid-summer. Through occasional rental, owners have also been able to cover expenses and more quite readily. Some include guest homes which can be rented out separately, or as part of the main house.

A couple of luxury homes in the area have recently seen considerable price reductions from original asking price, one of them now reduced to less than 50% of what a similar adjacent home is being listed for.

Akumal also includes a small village center, again with plenty of trees and green areas integrated. Here there are some small restaurants, little shops of local handicrafts and Mexican art, and a few basic services. Life in Akumal is quiet, and relaxing.

Within a short drive are many other features ideal for a comfortable lifestyle including 8 golf courses (one of which is host to Latin America’s first PGA event), large new shopping areas, and several marinas.
