Canadian energy mogul Rick George opens the doors to his family’s new Bahamian getaway on Great Abaco Island
As a young student working in the oil fields near Brush, Colorado, Rick George first got a glimpse of the life that lay
ahead of him. “I needed to afford to go to the university, and the best jobs were in the oil patches,” says the current president and CEO of Suncor, Canada’s largest energy company and one of the world’s largest independent energy companies.
George worked summers in the Denver Basin fields while attending Colorado State University and solidified his path to the top as a major player in the global energy sector. “I’ve traveled all around the world, but I always loved the oil patch,” he says. “It’s a great industry to be in.” After spending 10 years with Sun Company both in the US and the UK, he moved to Calgary in 1991 to take the reigns at Suncor.
But it wasn’t until recently that his sights turned to the ocean for recreation rather than oil. “All the credit is due to Julie, my wife of 37 years. It’s always been her dream to own a home on the water, somewhere warm, because we’ve been to a lot of cold spots in our travels.”
The couple recently constructed a home on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas at the Ritz-Carlton’s tony Abaco Resort. Located directly on the water with unbeatable views of Winding Bay, George says this is a home not just for himself and his wife, but for his entire family. With three children and two grandchildren, he’s hoping those numbers will soon increase. After a recent trip to visit the property with his family, it was decided that his son and daughter will both soon be holding their wedding ceremonies right there.
“The large patio spaces create a lot of usable outdoor space. You look right into the horseshoe bay,” says George, whose oceanfront home features 5,500 square feet of interior space coupled with the same amount of terrace space. Combine that with five bedrooms, five full and two half-bathrooms, a pool with its own island, and a covered lookout tower, and you’ve got a Caribbean paradise.
“There’s a short walk to the beach and great amenities at the Abaco Club, including a great golf club,” George says. “You have it all right there. It’s a terrific location.” For more information on the Ritz-Carlton Destination Club, call 866-770-2619 or visit ritzcarltonclub.com.

Rick George’s company (Suncor) has just laid off thousands of employees and here he is showing off his mansion…..how insensitive.

There haven’t been layoffs at Suncor let alone thousands. When people work as hard as he has, who cares if they reaps the benefits!?

He got rid of lazy, fat, useless dead weight people ….
And if you do not agree you are one of them or know someone who is.
If you are not useless you can get work in Fort Mac.
Dont comment on people’s business decisions when you obviously know nuthing…..

Way to go Rick! I was feeling a bit down – but you’ve cheered me up no end! Glad to see that you are coining it in – I just pity the poor employees down the line once the full repercussions of the Suncor-PetroCanada merger are clear.
As for Peter and Dave – the ‘Hardcore Suncor’ fans, well, if you honestly believe what you wrote then fair enough and I hope that the nurses return soon to take you to your padded rooms. Suncor has let some world class talent leave in their pursuit of the Oil Sands madness – and the epicentre of the world isn’t in ‘Fort Mac’.
As for his house, it looks lovely but I hope that he gets piles from sitting in that mansion.

Here, here Pietro
Suncor will be in big financial trouble even after they have asset stripped Petro- Canada’s once thriving International business. But what will BIG Rick care ???? He will jump ship with a massive payoff and hopefully get more than piles sitting at his luxury villa in the Bahamas.

He has done good things for Suncor and former Petro-Canada. He deserves this. He is the hardest working man of Canada, sorry United States of America. I am proud to call him uncle Rick.

Rick and Ron Brenneman pulled a fast one on all the staff, shareholders and the Canadian Government – this “merger” was supposed to make the new company the largest “integrated” oil company in Canada but after all of PCA’s assets are sold off and only the primo oil sands assets are kept, you will have a company a little larger than the “cash strapped” Suncor was before the deal. Thousands of layoffs are correct so far and more are coming & happening now, not to mention all the people that are throwing in the towel to move to other companies. I, myself, got a package in Dec 2009 along with my entire dept. when Suncor outsourced all IT support to India & Mexico (so we can’t all be dead wood). I was hired back on contract to help at twice what I was making on salary – got to love the efficiencies…. lol
