When Does a Cruise Become Luxury?

We are living in a world where you can surf on a ship, climb a rock wall at sea and watch a Broadway show while riding the waves, most cruises from Southampton now include these luxury facilities. Commercial cruise lines are the archetype of modern society exhibitionist, processed and always looking for something bigger and better. An offshoot of all these overpowering amenities is extra weight which in turn means these monster cruises are slow in the turn and alike to cholesterol in that they’re likely to cause blockages along the diminutive scenic ocean routes.

These of are not luxury cruises, despite the assertions of many. Equally this does not mean big cannot mean luxury although typically the vastness of a ship usually correlates directly with an impersonal experience. So when exactly does a cruise become luxury? A term so often paraded and valued by marketing types.

There are many definitions of the term “luxury” my personal favorite is by Oxford Dictionaries, “Luxury is a pleasure obtained only rarely”. If luxury is pleasure obtained only rarely then suffocating cruise lines with popular franchises I see every day on land is certainly not a luxury. Of course a pleasure obtained daily by myself could be a rarity for someone else, luxury differs person to person.

In this day and age, travelers are becoming more sophisticated and knowledgeable of what a cruise line has to offer. As a result luxury cruise lines are competing to differentiate themselves from the rest of the market; luxury cruises are constantly transforming their facilities and services. While it may be just for a day and only for a few hours at that, the tablescape you create for your Thanksgiving meal does much more than simply reinforce the theme of the day. It sets the mood, helps create the tone and ambiance you’re searching for and says much about your own taste and the taste you want to share with others. Whether you hope to bring your guests into a romantic setting, one dripping in elegance, one meant to calm and sooth or one full of vibrant life, your table can easily say this and much more.

If you’re searching for the perfect inspiration this year, consider some of these traditional ideas as well as some more unique thoughts that may just take your home to the level you need it to go to!

Traditional

The typical thought behind a Thanksgiving tablescape is one with a blend of fall colors: oranges, browns, deep greens and low reds. This is the easiest to pull off because the supplies are readily at your fingertips and it simply requires picking your favorites from the holiday section and placing items together in a complimentary fashion. The feeling you will typically accomplish going traditional is one of deep warmth and comfort. Organic

An organic theme is my favorite style of all. The richer and earthier, the better for our home. It has a tendency to ground the atmosphere, to stabilize and to remind me of all the things I’m thankful for. There’s nothing flimsy, nothing “airy” or “out there,” and that’s just what I crave. This style tends to bring families and friends together in an intimate way, perfect for deep, touching conversations that focus on the season and what it means and what each person means to the other. This year, my preference to avoid the traditional pumpkins and squash however, and go for an earthy, organic apple/apple cider feel.

In between these three are any number of other themes for tablescapes: humorous, kid-approved, classic, whimsical, etc. Yours will likely match your home décor because there’s a reason you like that feel and like to surround yourself in a particular atmosphere, but you may also find yourself craving something new this year. If you’re tired of something laid back, as your home normally is, see if you can pull off elegant or even classic. And if you’d rather your guests not feel the need to eat with the proper silverware and worry about not slouching, then maybe you’ll want to lay out a display built to inspire relaxation.

It’s all up to you, so play around and have some fun. You can be thankful all the while that you simply have the opportunity to create the tablescape and atmosphere that you desire for your friends and family.

The holidays are almost here and that means being able to spend quality time with friends and family. For many, it also means playing host and accommodating overnight guests. Make the Bed and Make Some Room

Nothing is more inviting after a day of traveling than a cozy bed. Take care to put on clean sheets and fluff the pillows. If you’ve been using your guest bedroom as storage since last Thanksgiving, clear it out before your guests arrive. Give guests somewhere to place their luggage, like a bench or luggage rack. Clean and Decorate

Give your guests a warm welcome by surprising them with a thoughtful gift basket. Include bottled water, fresh fruit or pretzels. Make sure to include something sweet for them to snack on. If your visitors are new to the area, stick in a map or a visitors guide. Also include a book or magazine for them to read when all is quiet at your house. Luxury Housing Market Escapes Real Estate Market Slump

As a sluggish economy, tight credit and dwindling consumer confidence continue to plague the majority of the real estate market it seems as though the 1.5 % of the market referred to as the luxury home sector is not only surviving, but thriving by comparison. AOL Real Estate even goes as far as calling the housing market “bipolar;” consisting of two parts that move in opposite directions. According to Zillow, prices of $1 million –plus houses have risen .7 % since February while prices of houses under $1 million have fallen by more then 1.5%.

Even though both ends of the market were hit hard by the subprime crash, the consumer demographic for high-end real estate fairs much better in the wake of an economic downturn. High-end buyers have easier access to cash and credit and the financial security to trigger consumer confidence even in this economy. When a $20 million dollar home drops to $10 millions it is essentially “a bargain” and pushes high-end buyers into the market. Foreign cash is also a big factor in high-end home sales. Currently, foreigners see the U.S. as the clearance rack for luxury homes and are sweeping up the deals. For those lucky few who find themselves in the elite population able to afford these properties it seems like it may be the perfect time to jump on the band wagon while prices are still at “bargain levels” and perhaps invest in that dream house, or second or third home.
